This particular setlist was thoughtfully curated to engage his devoted listenership, who, at this show, sang along to his lyrics in sublime, chill-inducing unison. This live record heedfully honors a legendary venue, beloved songwriter and an evolving South.

On a single disc that runs just under an hour (each performance was about double that), there is unused time to add more. What’s here though is terrific with invigorated versions of Isbell’s best tunes given a crackling edge. Despite a mix that buries the keyboards, the sound is sharp and crisp, making this a great souvenir for fans and a solid primer of Isbell’s talents for newcomers.

True to their studio counterparts, the songs on Live from the Ryman vary nicely in style and tempo. ... Live from the Ryman offers no big surprises for anyone who's already a fan of his music. If you're a newbie, this may be the perfect introduction.

These are Isbell’s most potent songs to date. ... The 400 Unit also get to shine.

Live from the Ryman doesn't change what you already know about Jason Isbell as a writer or a performer, but as a document of his many strengths, it's powerful and thoroughly entertaining, and is one more reminder that he's as smart and gifted as any songwriter at work today--and he can work the crowd like nobody's business.
